Fixing Fashion co-founder Alicia Minnaard knows that repairing your clothes can be daunting. But she also knows it doesn’t have to be. In the latest in our 5Insiders series, Alicia shares her best tips for getting started repairing – and teaches us how to sashiko patch repair.

Why care for our clothes?

Throughout history people have been repairing clothes to keep them going for longer. Understanding our global history through repair enables us to reconnect with it and revive its significance.

Repairing your clothes instead of buying new ones saves valuable resources and lowers emissions. According to textiles sustainability organization Wrap, repairing one cotton t-shirt can save over 7.5kg of CO2, the same amount as driving a car 70km.

How to patch repair

A sashiko patch repair is a simple repair that is incredibly durable. Originating in Japan, the sashiko patch uses a simple straight stitch which covers the entire patch over a rip. Due to its many stitches, sashiko is really strong, so it’s great for places with high friction.
