On this tiny islet near Tahiti in French Polynesia, local guide Thierry Sommer walks us through the forest, where we meet huge crabs and ancient trees.

Here on Motu Reiono, a tiny islet in French Polynesia, Thierry Sommer is our guide.

The forests here on the island are the closest you’ll ever to see to what the primary forest used to look like in this tiny Pacific nation. Thanks to the efforts of local conservationists to eradicate invasive species, native hermit crabs and cabbage trees are thriving.

This is Thierry’s happy place: wrangling coconut crabs strong enough to snap your finger off (he still has all 10) and sheltering beneath the grandpa cabbage tree.

“Don’t change the environment like you want it to be changed,” says Thierry. “Change yourself first.”
