The return of swifts signals the start of the British summer. But with populations declining, one community in Greater Manchester decided to be better neighbors to these beautiful birds, by becoming a ‘swift street’.
Suzanne Pendleton says she knew “nothing” about birds before Covid lockdowns hit, and she found herself paying closer attention to the nature she saw on her daily walks.
When she learned to recognize swifts, and heard how their populations are declining, Suzanne and her neighbors set out to create a ‘swift street’, providing nest boxes and healthy habitats for these incredible birds.
It all culminated in a party to welcome the swifts home, as they complete their epic migration from Africa. See the full story in the video below.
