While EVs and e-bikes are revolutionizing transport at street-level, let’s not forget the smart solution right beneath our feet. Like these amazing European subways, photographed by Thibault Drutel.
You could say that subways are the unsung hero of urban transport, invisibly doing a lot of heavy lifting in terms of moving the masses from A to B while slashing emissions. Recent research has found that subways reduce population-related CO2 emissions by about 50 % for the 192 cities in the world that have them.
That’s why it’s high time to celebrate this sleek and speedy mode of transport keeping millions of cars off the road. Featuring some of Europe’s most stunning stations, this series by French photographer Thibault Drutel feels like a fitting tribute.
“Each station, carefully chosen for its symmetrical design, becomes a scene where time seems suspended, yet movement persists,” he says.

Focused on the wonderful world of rewilding, Volume 5 sees us get into the weeds – and go beyond the ferns – with our green-thumbed cover star Zach Galifianakis, walk with wolves in Slovenia, create a wilder world in Denmark, find meaning in fashion, and much, much more.
