Deep in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, the Huni Kuin people are reconnecting to their language, rituals and ancestral knowledge after centuries of displacement and oppression.

In Brazil’s remote northwest, the community of Novo Futuro is a four-day boat trip away from the nearest town, on land formerly dominated by the global demand for rubber. Today it is once again home to the Huni Kuin, the Indigenous people whose traditions have always been rooted in a sacred relationship with the living world that sustains them.

Over the past 20 years, they have worked to restore their connection to the land and the ways of their ancestors, building a sustainable future grounded in their knowledge of the past.

Photographer Lucía Alonso spent a month with this resilient community. Her project, Eskawata Kayawai, which translates as ‘The Spirit of Transformation’ in the local Hãtxa Kuĩ language, celebrates the power of healing and collective wisdom passed from one generation to another.

For her “it’s a reminder that reconnecting with our roots and cultural heritage is essential not only for Indigenous communities but for all of us”.
