Here in Alaska, keeping warm is a big part of life.
In fact, the average resident in the state spends nearly a third of their income heating their home. So making sure houses hold heat inside can make a big difference to people’s wallets, as well as being better for the climate.
A team of researchers in Fairbanks, the state’s second-largest city, specialise in working out how to make buildings more efficient, and are sharing their knowledge so more people can avoid “letting dollars go right out the window”.
There are even ways to insulate homes using recycled materials made from old clothes, styrofoam and paper.
