Art meets nature in Almudena Romero’s ephemeral photos, which are imprinted on living materials such as leaves and plants.
In a world overflowing with things, including images, do we need any more?
In The Pigment Change series, Spanish-British photographer Almudena Romero explores the fleeting nature of images and the deeper implications of human consumption for the future of the planet.
Her innovative approach to photography, using organic materials such as leaves and natural light, transforms traditional image-making into a reflection on impermanence and the fragility of our environment.
Instead of capturing moments through conventional photography, which typically requires harsh reactive chemicals and, increasingly, energy-guzzling technology, she produces plant-based photos using living materials.
Employing techniques such as photobleaching and photosynthesis, Romero allows sunlight to ‘develop’ the images, revealing them on leaves and plants instead of traditional photo paper. These images are inherently transient. They fade with time as the plants decay, reminding us of the temporary and finite nature of our resources.
Romero imprints some of her photos – like those of her family – directly onto cress. Cress is a fast-growing plant whose pigments reveal images in delicate shades of green. The process itself is slow and requires careful control of light exposure, linking the act of creation with natural cycles.
By using living, sustainable materials, Romero draws attention to how we often try to accumulate and preserve, despite the inevitable decay. Her work invites us to reflect on the environmental impact of human consumption and the illusion of permanence in a world grappling with climate change.
Ultimately, Romero’s plant-based photos beautifully encapsulate the tension between creation, degradation and our relationship with nature.
