Sacred river in a modern age: Portrait of the Ganges

Flowing more than 2,500 kilometres from the Himalayan glaciers to the Bay of Bengal, the Ganges is India’s longest river and its most sacred. Known as Ganga Ma (Mother Ganges), the river is revered as a source of water, food and religious purification.

At first glance, @giuliodisturco softly coloured, hazy photos of life along this vital waterway seem to reflect the same reverence. But a closer look reveals a darker reality. The haze is in fact toxic smog, and the riverbank is littered with rubbish.

Di Sturco calls his attempt to find beauty in the dirty side of industrialisation “a new aesthetic of pollution”. By enticing rather than shocking, he hopes to make us take a second look and spark a wider debate about how global challenges like pollution are portrayed. “For me, we are a bit saturated by images in the press,” he told the British Journal of Photography. “If you are able to talk about any issue in a different way, I think it has more impact.”

With a keen eye and macro lens, photographer Eric Cho captures a wonderful world of fungi that most of us miss.

Read the words ‘frosty bonnet’, ‘pixie’s parasol’ and ‘bleeding fairy helmet’ and you would be forgiven for thinking that you had stumbled across the catalogue of a niche clothing line. These are actually the names of fungi, photographed in stunning detail by Eric Cho.

The Taiwan-based pharmacist and photographer posts his shots on Instagram, where he has built a following of almost 43,000 fellow fungi enthusiasts.

Fungi play a varied and vital role in our ecosystems: they break down organic matter, recycle nutrients in soil and are largely responsible for the rain in rainforests by attracting moisture to the spores they release into the air.

Cho’s most popular photo? The tiny Mycena subcyanocephala. Standing at roughly 0.1 cm tall, it is one of the smallest mushrooms in the world. He captured it in the early stages of growth, when the head glows a spectacular blue.

From tending a window box to maintaining a rambling backyard, gardening is known to improve mental and physical well-being. Dutch photographer Lou-Lou van Staaveren (@uollou) used her family’s plot near Amsterdam as a starting point to reflect on our relationship with nature as well as the simple pleasure of planting a seed and watching it grow.

The project, which started three years ago, has yielded a playful collection of photos in which Van Staaveren documents the plants and people in the garden through the seasons. Some of the images are more experimental, incorporating hand-painting or digital manipulation techniques.

This interaction between observation and intervention is where Van Staaveren finds much of her inspiration. “The photographer and gardener both slide along this scale of control, with intervention at one end and observation at the other. Sometimes you intervene, sometimes you don’t. [As a photographer], I keep going until I like what I see, and I think that’s what a gardener does as well.”

She called the project Pleasant Place, a reference to the literary concept ‘locus amoenus’ which describes an idyllic space of safety or comfort. It’s a fitting title at a time when many people are turning to gardening to combat anxiety and connect with nature.

Rebecca Solnit has long been a voice of reason and inspiration in our world. As an author, essayist, and activist, she has tackled topics ranging from gender and social justice to climate change and the environment. Her latest work, released this week, Not Too Late: Changing the Climate Story from Despair to Possibility, is a call to action for all of us to take responsibility for the state of our planet.

Did you know plants have a voice too? A recent study published in @cell_journal showed plants emit ultrasonic airborne sounds when under stress.

Researchers from @telavivuni discovered that when a plant is exposed to environmental stress such as a lack of water or being cut, it emits sound waves that can be detected using special equipment. These sound waves are not audible to the human ear but can be translated into frequencies that we can hear. The sounds differ depending on what stress they are under - like us, they are unique in expressing their discomfort.

So next time you're watering your plants or pruning your garden, remember that your plants may be sending out a message in their own exceptional way.

Giving clothes a new life - was the aim of the sustainable fashion event hosted in collaboration with our partner @fixingfashion.community.

We welcomed attendees to learn repair techniques from 4 expert repair artisans:

👉 @bronwen.yj taught us how to infuse knits with extra style by teaching darning.
👉 @sashikodenim followed their namesake and showcased denim art with Japanese sashiko stitching.
👉 @woolfiller featured their patented wool-filling technique and made woollen garments into new-old favourites.
👉 @humade.nl brought kintsugi patching to textiles bringing the gold-and-silver-lining when mending tears and stains.

For those not wanting to repair, @theclothingloop hosted a clothing swap, allowing people to freely exchange pre-loved clothes for new favourites.

Can prosthetic legs be made from plastic waste?

To celebrate #GlobalRecyclingDay, we wanted to look at the impact one of our partners, @realpreciousplastic, has on recycling worldwide. A global community of plastic recyclers, Precious Plastic has been making ways to turn plastic waste into precious items.

The recycling workshop, @yayasankakikita, in Bali, Indonesia, is recycling 2 tonnes of plastic a month! But their impact goes far beyond. They recycle plastic to make prosthetic legs, providing something truly precious - the ability to move.

Darning is a repair technique where you create a woven patch over the hole or in the hole. To bring your darning work to the next level you need to know what kind of weaving pattern you can use.

This is an easy repair (but requires a bit of patience) which is shown in the video above from @fixingfashion.community and at their academy.

Leaf-cutter ants working together in the Amazon rainforest 🌺 

@paulrosolie shared this inspiringly beautiful video of ants on the floor of the Amazon rainforest. From Paul Rosolie:

“These incredible ants have the distinction of being the primary consumer of vegetation in the Amazon rainforests, where their actions remove 15–17% of leaf production. Leaf-cutter ants live in massive colonies – sometimes reaching three million – and can extend deep underground where they build ventilation tunnels, reproduction chambers, and farms, all forming gigantic hills for their homes.”

This reminds us of something that Rosolie taught us during our IG live interview (available on our profile) with him:

“There’s always something going on in the rainforest. You’re so surrounded by life. It’ll change your life to walk through such incredible nature. It’s the absolute top level of diversity.”

We love having one of the smallest creatures in the natural world inspire and show the complexities of such a thriving ecosystem.

Iraq once led the world in date production, but lost over half its trees to war. Now the nation’s iconic palms are being revived along with the industry they support.

As part of a drive to rescue the date palm from the ravages of decades of Iraqi conflict, Labeeb Kashif Al-Gitta took a modest 20 trees under his wing four years ago in a pioneering ‘adopt-a-palm’ programme.

Today, he has 12,000 in his care, many nurtured back to health after years of abandonment in back gardens or farms. And he’s not stopping there.

“Next year, 50,000,” he enthused from the Baghdad headquarters of Nakhla, meaning ‘palm tree’ in Arabic. “We’re aiming to have a million trees and become one of the biggest date producers in the world.”

But Al-Gitta’s vision is about more than just numbers. By helping rescue his homeland’s national symbol – the date palm – from decay, he’s also reviving its lost heritage.

The spark for Al-Gitta’s rescue mission was a TV programme about an ‘adopt-a-beehive’ initiative in the United Arab Emirates. Al-Gitta applied the same model to mature trees which – through years of neglect – had ceased to bear fruit. For an annual subscription of $35-$75 per tree, Nakhla provides a comprehensive care programme, including fertilising, pruning and harvesting, and employs skilled climbers who scale the 40-foot palms to gather the fruit.

It’s then processed and sold, with palm owners receiving a share of the profits. In a tandem model run in conjunction with the Iraqi government, businesses can sponsor trees on city pavements in return for a mini-billboard and some tax breaks.

For now, Nakhla’s market is largely domestic and seasonal. Ramadan is a favoured time, when dates are traditionally eaten to break the daily fast. Al-Gitta, though, has other ideas. “We’d like people to eat them every day, “ he said. “Like me. For health, and for energy.”

Each of these monarch butterflies has just completed an extraordinary feat for the first and last time.

Every autumn, millions of monarchs migrate thousands of miles from Canada and the United States to the mountains of Mexico. Their instincts tell them where to go – these butterflies have never been here before, and won’t live long enough to come back.

But with their forest habitats shrinking and their protectors facing violence, can they keep surviving the migration?

The oyamel fir trees where the butterflies roost are under threat from illegal logging and climate disruption. The area has been made into a special butterfly reserve, which thousands of tourists visit every year.

Photo 3: Pablo Angeles Hernández is a forest engineer at the butterfly reserve. When the weather is too hot and stormy, the fir trees become parched and vulnerable to parasites. Experiments are underway to breed the trees to be more resilient, and even to move existing trees uphill, where they are less vulnerable to rising temperatures.

Photo 7: Geneticist Cuauhtemoc Saenz Romero has been growing fir trees higher up in the hills, to find those that cope best with the change, and crossbreed them. In this way, he hopes to make sure the butterflies continue to have a safe place to ride out the winter.
